Refined Saltbox
Yarmouth, Massachusetts
In Yarmouth, our client had been vacationing for summers in their existing saltbox home. With retirement around the corner, our client tasked us with the challenge of re-imagining the historic salt box form, by incorporating a large addition to include a new master suite and family room, and integrating more modern elements into the exterior and interior design.
We began the design process by trying to minimize the impact to the saltbox facade by introducing a flat roof addition to the back of the house. The flat roof elements allowed us to keep the existing second floor bedroom windows, while increasing the kitchen and living room space on the first floor.
The next step was to re-incorporate the existing architectural details into a new master bedroom addition. We capture existing roof lines and slopes and built them into the new master bedroom addition in order to make this program feel like it was always apart of the original house design.
The existing interior of the home was very segmented with a lot of walls and small rooms that created a convoluted layout. We re-imagined the layout and circulation for the first floor by opening up the floor plan and creating a series of large rooms that incorporated view corridors. The view corridors visually connected the interior, but also create site lines from the front to the back of the house which allows for the natural light to filter into all of the interior spaces.
